We’re Hiring explores how the language used in job advertisements can create barriers before the recruitment process has even begun. Focusing on the contrast between masculine-coded and more neutral
or inclusive language, the project investigates how tone, phrasing, and word choice can influence who feels encouraged, or discouraged, to apply.
The outcome consists of a series of two job advertisements presenting the same role written in contrasting styles, alongside a live, interactive element where participants are invited to stand with the advert they would be more likely to apply for. This physical response makes visible how language directly impacts decision-making. By translating subtle linguistic bias into a tangible, visual
outcome, the project exposes how inequality can be embedded within everyday recruitment materials.
